John Rabe: He Wore a Swastika, But Saved Up to 250,000 Lives

China never forgot him, even if he was a Nazi.

When people hear “Nazi,” they think of genocide, war, cruelty. No nuance. No sympathy.

But John Rabe does not fit that frame.
A Nazi Party member.
And the man who helped protect hundreds of thousands during the Nanjing Massacre.

Who was John Rabe?

He served as a Siemens representative in Nanjing and became head of their local branch by 1931. In 1934, he joined the Nazi Party mainly to safeguard his career.

When Japanese forces advanced on Nanjing, most foreigners fled. Rabe stayed.
