The major point for offering tax reduction incentives is to attract business to increase jobs and increase the tax base for the overall benefits of that community. The cost benefit is not there for data centers if the local or state government runs a 5 or 10 year analysis. Something they call a 5-year plan!
I seriously question the education level of these decision makers, not to mention the prime motivation for approving a decidedly financially and environmentally harmful contract impacting an entire community. I seriously question why the people who live in these communities allow their gov't officials to ruin their lives. Their kids receive free college. The list is long. If you decide to do an article on this, you'll probably have to break it down into several categories and report over several articles. Trump is now openly contemptuous of the rural white Americans who voted for him 3 times.
Instead of being used to increase production and innovate across all sectors of the economy, AI is being used to cut jobs and dehumanize work and education. Americans are subsidizing Big Tech through War Department and National Science Foundation funding for research, sweetheart contracts for weapons and surveillance systems, federal, state, and local tax breaks, and funding for infrastructure for data centers.
Rural America wanted factories in the Post-war era. Though the work was grueling, dirty, and dangerous, it paid enough to own a home, and workers felt respected, proud, and part of building America. Deindustrialization since the ‘80s replaced those jobs with low-pay, low-respect gig and service jobs. While the image of white workers as Fox News zombies was always a liberal media creation, their disillusionment and anger about economic injustice and both political parties are surging. Local single-issue movements in crisis periods can multiply and merge into a multi-national labor movement, with the potential to form a powerful anti-establishment grassroots force.
In the US, which doesn't really have much industry left, AI can't actually boost productivity. In the end, all it'll do is take away white-collar office jobs and cause massive unemployment.
No matter which country you're in, AI is going to cause job losses, that's inevitable. The key is whether that country has a way to deal with it. But in the US, I don't see any concrete measures yet to prevent those job losses.
Instead, the people in government keep pushing for data centers. I think they've got the priorities backwards: electricity and fixing the unemployment problem should come first, then data centers. But we all know those oligarchs aren't going to go for that,they'll always put profits first.
