When the information hit the press in 2003 that the CIA was modifying Wikipedia Pages Foggy Bottom immediately went in to Damage Control Mode and put out the story the incident was the product of a few Mischief Makers that went rogue on their lunch hours. And of course the Dominant Media devoured the line like a bunch of gullible fools.

The more immediate problem you're rightly identifying is the added layer of LM AIs and how information it draws from or is trained by will change and be edited to create favorable and unfavorable narratives, which the users know nothing about and will negatively influence decisions making based on bad information.
Personally I think it's a positive development, because unfortunately, in every country, from the USA, Europe, China, Russia, the middle east, across Asia, Power and powerful people and factions don't like criticism and bad reviews. It's very difficult to meet people who are genuinely interested in the truth, as this is prone to hurt their ego, identity and sense of self.
So it's a positive development because it forces us to confront the issue of truth. Reliable information sharing is the basis of successful societies across cultures.

LLMs are great at reality-distortion and they are planning to take full advantage of that fact, no doubt.
We, Humans, must have means to preserve the reality, the truth.
