Americans are taught to equate democracy and elections. In fact, the capitalist class ensures that elected officials support their program of war abroad and austerity at home, through financial and ideological control of corporate media and both political parties. The few outsiders like Ilhan Omar and Marjorie Taylor Greene are marginalized, and the loyal opposition like Bernie Sanders kept safely contained. Iran, Cuba, and North Korea have authoritarian governments because they are most effective in maintaining national sovereignty by excluding U.S. imperialist organizations that penetrate and undermine independent nations, such as the National Endowment for Democracy, CIA, and NGOs like the Gates Foundation. Only a socialist society with the working class in power owning and managing the economy, is a true democracy, with rule by the people.
