The Art of War recommends knowing everything about your opponent, while hiding everything about yourself. In particular, it suggests feints to cause your opponent to respond at great cost. I believe the I Ching was used in this manner, which is why it contains military strategy. Asking the I Ching for a reading gives a random answer, which is of course unpredictable, as are successive answers. Following such a system of feints leaves the opponent wasting resources trying to find a strategy where none exists. The ultimate goal, of course, is to avoid war (and encouraging your generals).
